Lighting is one of the most powerful tools in interior design. The right lighting can transform a space—making it feel cozy, energizing, dramatic, or serene. But how do you choose the right lamps, set the perfect brightness, and make your lighting smart? Let’s break it down step by step.

1. Choosing the Right Lamp

Types of Lamps:

  • Ceiling Lamps: Great for general lighting. Choose flush mounts for low ceilings, or pendants/chandeliers for higher ceilings and statement pieces.
  • Floor Lamps: Ideal for corners, reading nooks, or to add height and drama.
  • Table Lamps: Perfect for side tables, desks, and bedside tables.
  • Wall Lamps/Sconces: Save space and add accent lighting to hallways, bathrooms, or above artwork.
  • LED Strips: Flexible for under cabinets, behind TVs, or along shelves for a modern touch.

Our tip: Mix lamp types for layered lighting—combine ambient (general), task (focused), and accent (decorative) lighting for depth and flexibility. Start with a foundation of practical, utility lighting. Spotlights and LED strips are perfect for this—they provide even, shadow-free illumination for kitchens, hallways, and workspaces. LED strips under cabinets or along shelves can make tasks easier and highlight architectural features. Once your utility lighting is in place, layer in decorative lamps: think statement pendants, cozy floor lamps, or sculptural table lamps. These add personality, warmth, and visual interest, turning a functional space into a welcoming home.

2. Understanding Color Temperature (Kelvin)

Kelvin (K) measures the color temperature of light:

  • Warm White (2,700–3,000K): Cozy, yellowish light. Best for living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas.
  • Neutral White (3,500–4,100K): Balanced, clean light. Good for kitchens, bathrooms, and workspaces.
  • Cool White/Daylight (5,000–6,500K): Crisp, bluish light. Ideal for garages, laundry rooms, or anywhere you need high visibility.

Our tip: We always recommend warm white light (around 2,700–3,000K) for living spaces. This soft, yellowish glow mimics the warmth of candlelight or a sunset, instantly making rooms feel inviting and relaxing. It’s perfect for living rooms, bedrooms, and dining areas—anywhere you want to unwind or entertain. Cooler, blue-toned lights (above 4,000K) can feel harsh and clinical, so save those for garages or utility rooms. For most homes, warm white is the secret to a cozy, calming atmosphere.

3. Lamp Height: Setting the Mood and Function

Ceiling Lamps:

  • Above Dining Tables: Hang 70–90 cm above the table for intimacy without glare.
  • Hallways/Living Rooms: At least 2.1 meters from the floor to avoid head bumps.

Floor & Table Lamps:

  • Reading Lamps: The bottom of the shade should be at eye level when seated.
  • Bedside Lamps: About 40–50 cm tall, with the bulb hidden from direct view.

Wall Lamps:

  • General Rule: Mount 150–170 cm from the floor, or at eye level.

Lamp height matters! For pendants above a dining table, aim for 70–90 cm above the surface. Floor and table lamps should have the shade at eye level when seated. Wall lamps are best at 150–170 cm from the floor.

LED Strips & Custom Lamps:
LED strips are incredibly versatile. You can use them under cabinets, behind TVs, along stairs, or even inside closets. But the real magic is in customization:

  • Create your own lamp: Combine LED strips with diffusers, wood, or metal to make unique wall art or light sculptures.
  • Shape and color: LED strips can be cut to size, bent around corners, and come in a range of colors (including RGB for mood lighting).
  • Smart control: Many LED strips are compatible with smart systems, letting you change color and brightness with your phone or voice.

With a little creativity, you can design lighting that’s truly one-of-a-kind.

4. Brightness: How Much Light Do You Need?

Measured in lumens (lm):

  • Living Room: 1,500–3,000 lm total
  • Bedroom: 2,000–4,000 lm total
  • Kitchen: 3,000–6,000 lm total
  • Bathroom: 4,000–8,000 lm total

Tip: Use dimmers or smart bulbs to adjust brightness for different moods and times of day. Dimmers are a game-changer for home lighting.

  • Bathrooms: Install a dimmer so you can lower the lights at night—no more blinding yourself during midnight trips!
  • Living Room: Use dimmers to switch from bright, functional light during the day to a soft, cozy glow for movie nights or relaxing evenings.
  • Bedroom: Dimmers let you wind down with gentle light before bed, or use as a night light for a calming atmosphere.

Dimmers give you total control over brightness, helping you set the perfect mood for any time of day.

5. Making Your Lighting Smart & Automatic

Smart Lighting Options:

  • Smart Bulbs: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth bulbs (like Philips Hue, IKEA TRÅDFRI, or LIFX) let you control color, brightness, and schedules via app or voice.
  • Smart Switches: Replace traditional switches for whole-room control without changing bulbs.
  • Motion Sensors: Lights turn on automatically when you enter a room—great for hallways, bathrooms, or closets.
  • Scenes & Automation: Set routines (e.g., “Good Morning” turns on kitchen lights at 7:00 AM, “Movie Night” dims living room lights).

How to Get Started:

  1. Choose a Platform: Google Home, Apple HomeKit, or Amazon Alexa.
  2. Our tip: Philips Hue is our favorite smart lighting system—easy to set up, endlessly flexible, and compatible with almost everything. (not sponsored!)

    Step-by-Step Guide:

    1. Start with a Hue Starter Kit:

    2. Install the Hue Bridge:
      • Plug it into your Wi-Fi router and power it up.
      • Download the Philips Hue app (iOS/Android) and follow the setup instructions.
    3. Add Bulbs:
      • Screw in your Hue bulbs and turn on the power.
      • Use the app to search for and add each bulb to your system.
    4. Create Rooms & Zones:
      • Organize bulbs by room or area for easy control.
    5. Set Up Scenes & Automations:
      • Use the app to create scenes (e.g., “Relax,” “Energize,” “Movie Night”) and schedules (e.g., lights on at sunset, off at bedtime).
    6. Expand with Accessories:
      • Add Hue dimmer switches, motion sensors, or smart plugs for even more control.
    7. Enjoy Openness & Compatibility:
      • Philips Hue works with Apple HomeKit, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and many third-party apps.
      • You can control your lights with your voice, phone, tablet, or even smart watches.
      • The system is open to integration with IFTTT, Razer Chroma, and more—so you can sync lights with music, games, or routines.
