The Japandi style has been gaining popularity for its unique blend of Japanese and Scandinavian influences. We are fans and Japandi has become our go-to-style, when we decorate our own home and help our interior clients. But what exactly is Japandi style and how can you incorporate it into your home?

What is Japandi Style?

Japandi style is a fusion of Japanese minimalism and Scandinavian simplicity. It combines the clean lines and neutral colors of Scandinavian design with the warmth and natural elements of Japanese aesthetics. The result is a harmonious and balanced look that promotes a sense of calm and tranquility in the space.

With the exploded interest in this particular style, the concepts is also ocassionally overexploited. The concept contains much more than just beige colors and minimalism. Here are out take on it.

Key Elements of Japandi Style

One of the key elements of Japandi style is the use of natural materials such as wood, plants, and stone. The materials should add warmth and texture to the space, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. We often call this the hotel-wibe. When you enter a japandi-inspired room, you should feel welcomed, relaxed and get a sense of not wanting to leave.

In terms of color palette, Japandi style typically features a combination of neutral tones like white, beige, and grey, with occasional pops of muted colors like soft blues or greens. When deciding on colors, tone-on-tone can be a good trick to ensure a calm but varied scene. In our opinion, red, yellow, blue and green can be really difficult to incorporate. Just keep it simple.

There are several japanese concepts to consider, if you are going all-in. Ma, Shakkei, Zen, Yügen are just some of the principles. A more famous one is probably the concept of wabi-sabi, which embraces imperfection and impermanence. This can be seen in the use of handmade pottery, vintage furniture, and organic shapes that add character and depth to the space. Wabi-sabi appreaciates the duration of time, meaning that items with age will lift your space.

How to Incorporate Japandi Style in Your Home

If you're looking to bring the Japandi style into your home, start by decluttering and keeping the space simple and uncluttered. Opt for furniture with clean lines and a minimalist design, and add in natural elements like plants or wooden accents to create a sense of balance.

Choose a neutral color palette with a few accent colors to add visual interest without overwhelming the space. Incorporate natural textures like linen, wool, or rattan to add warmth and coziness to the room. And don't forget to add in some statement pieces, but please avoid the "classic" design pieces. In stead, find a unique piece with a story, or a art-piece that tells a story.

By embracing the principles of Japandi style, you can create a space that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also promotes a sense of peace and harmony. So why not give it a try and transform your home into a tranquil oasis inspired by the best of Japanese and Scandinavian design? We promise that you will not regret it.
